dissimulation, exhibition
Designed and installed in collaboration with Emily Rowlandsdissimulation was an installation that was displayed as part of Appalachian State University's Fall 2018 Senior Graphic Design Exhibition. The project sought to explore the way that social media encourages users to produce and share content that reduces complex, multi-dimensional people into flattened, picture-perfect personalities. Twenty-six images from real social media posts were collected from the community with consent and were deconstructed and reassembled through a mix of analog and digital processes. Each new image was displayed along with a short statement that explained the true story behind the image to portray an honest picture of what was actually happening in that person's life at the time the photo was taken.
dissimulation invites audience interaction and encourages viewers to physically reduce the visual noise that so often distracts us from the fact that the individuals we see on our screens are real people with complex emotions. This is done using a red piece of acrylic, which allows the viewer to hone in on the human figure in each “post,” emphasizing the humanity within. The exhibition culminated in a small-run edition of risograph printed books intended to represent an analog, more candid version of social media.
